About Us
The Bay Metropolitan Transportation Authority (also known as Bay Metro Transit) began operations in 1974. It is currently organized under Michigan Public Act 196 of 1986, as amended. The Authority serves all of Bay County, Michigan, with 447 square miles and approximately 110,000 residents. Services provided include: Fixed Route Service; Countywide Demand-Response Service (Bay DART--dial-a-ride); Flexible Route Service to sheltered worksites, child care centers and educational institutions.

The transit system is currently housed in a facility built in 1981 located at 1510 N. Johnson Street in Bay City, Michigan. This facility contains the administrative, maintenance, and operations functions of the transit system. The BMTA opened an intermodal terminal in downtown Bay City in 1991, at 1124 Washington Avenue. This terminal is the central transfer point for all BMTA fixed routes. It also serves as the terminal for intercity bus routes run by Greyhound Lines and Indian Trails, Inc. Schedule information for all BMTA and intercity routes can be obtained by calling (989) 894-2999.
The BMTA operates a fleet of 58 vehicles, which includes 14 vans. The majority of buses operated are low-floor models seating about 22 persons.
In the year 2005, the transit system's operating budget was approximately $6.5 million. In addition to state and federal operating assistance, the Authority receives local tax revenues generated by a .75 mill property tax levy which is renewable every 5 years (last renewed in November 2004). The BMTA has approximately 95 full-time and 11 part-time employees. Vehicle operators, service workers, and mechanics are members of United Steelworkers of America Local 8422. Staff employees are members of Teamsters Local 486.
Total annual ridership numbers approximately 650,000. Vehicles in the fleet travel about 1.5 million miles annually and about 90,000 annual service hours are operated.
